Photosynthesis is an abstract strategy game by Hjalmars Hach (The King's Dilemma), a winner of several prestigious awards, including the Golden Geek series. In a small, vibrant forest, many species of trees compete for access to sunlight. They grow higher and dig their roots deeper. When they die, they nourish the soil for their successors. In the game, each of you will have your own set of trees. On the forest board, you will compete for space and access to sunlight for your plants. Only sunlit trees will provide points, so avoid the shade! In Photosynthesis, you will encounter little randomness; here, each move will result from your carefully considered strategy, while being open to all opponents. Executing the right actions at the right time and making the right decisions about spending or saving Light points is the key to success. Plant trees, watch their growth, and cut them down at the right time to earn victory points. The one of you who gathers the most will win! The fight for light In nature, the great circle of life turns at a slow rhythm, extending the existence of subsequent species. Seeds grow into trees, these grow, mature, and die, enriching the soil for their successors. None of this would be possible without the sun and its life-giving light. For this reason, there is a constant struggle in the forest for access to as many rays as possible. The species that lose this battle will remain forever in the shade. Preparation Each of you has 6 Seed tokens and 14 Trees - 8 Small, 4 Medium, and 2 Large. At the beginning of the game, most of these components will be placed on your player boards (you will need to unlock them first), while 2 Seeds, 4 Small, and 1 Medium tree will be placed next to the boards and from these components you can use immediately. In the center of the table, place the main board and the Sun tile in a visible, printed spot on the board. Finally, each of you places 2 Small trees on selected outer fields of the main board. You can start playing! Photosynthesis The game consists of 18 rounds, measured by the Sun tile that circles around the board. Each round consists of two phases: the Photosynthesis Phase and the Life Cycle Phase. In the first, you gain Light points for every sunny tree. Check where the Sun tile is currently located and draw straight lines from it. Each tree in the path of these rays scores: Small for 1 point, Medium for 2, and Large for 3. But beware! Depending on their size, trees cast different-sized shadows, blocking access to sunlight for other trees! Life cycle The Light points you earn can be spent on various actions during the Life Cycle phase. First, you can buy additional Seeds and Trees from your board. Second, you can plant Seeds and then spend additional points for your trees to grow. And third, when the trees become Large, you can remove them from the board (death of the tree), gaining victory points, the number of which depends on the tree's position in the forest. In each round, you perform as many actions as your Light points allow you, and then it's time for the next player. Advantages: - Abstract strategy game by Hjalmars Hach (The King's Dilemma) - winner of many prestigious awards, including the Golden Geek series - No elements of randomness - Negative interaction and many possible paths to victory.
