The history of the Polonaise begins at the end of 1972. A successor to the 125p model is planned. In 1974, an agreement was signed between Pol-Mot and the Italian concern FIAT, which said that the construction works would be entrusted to the Italian side. In the same year, design work began at the Centro Stile Fiat. The first prototypes of the car marked as 125PN (Polacco Nuova Polish New) were created as early as 1975.
The name was chosen as a result of a plebiscite of the readers of Życie Warszawy in 1978. The new hatchback body was characterized by modern aesthetics and a considerable level of safety for those times.
